Methods in breast reconstruction
Breast reconstructions can be performed in the same session as breast cancer surgery or in the late period after breast cancer treatment is completely finished. The way to be followed is decided according to the patient.
Breast reconstruction with implant
A direct implant can be placed in the area formed after mastectomy, or a tissue expander can be placed first and a breast implant can be placed after sufficient pockets are obtained. The determining factor here is the quality of the skin. If there is suitable tissue to carry the implant, it can be applied in a single session, if the tissue quality is not suitable, it is performed in two sessions.
Breast reconstruction with own tissues
Breast repair can be performed by removing the back muscle, abdominal tissue, inner thigh muscle or hip muscle. Abdominal and back muscles can be carried freely or depending on their region. Other tissues must be transported freely by microsurgical methods. Repairs using abdominal tissue can be used for all types of breasts. Other options are more suitable for smaller breast sizes or can be used with a prosthesis to increase volume.
Transferring flaps containing muscle or subcutaneous tissue to the breast is a surgery that requires a long time and experience. Recovery periods are long, and include risks such as failure of the flap and secondary surgeries. Tissue transplantation may also be unsuccessful, so the patient who has undergone breast repair should decide on these surgeries with sufficient knowledge about the subject.
